Chapter 10-Health,Stress,and Coping


The 2007 highlighted movie "Reign Over Me" was about Alan Johnson who stumbles across Charlie Fineman, his old college roommate, played by Adam Sandler. Charlie Fineman was suffering from the death of his wife, and three daughters on the dark day of September 11. the terrosist acts brought upon New York. Durning the movie Alan Johnson notices Charlie's need of help and tries his best to accomidate Charlie with the much need help. This move relates to psycology class because it deals with Psychological Responses under the terms of major behavior Responses due to the stress of Charlies unfortunate loss. The 9/11 accident caused Charlie to have a burnout, a burnout is a pattern of physical and psychological dysfunction in response to continuous stress, due to the memories of his family that his wife's parents, his apparment, and many other family friends reproduce in side his mind. These memories eventually cause Charlie to develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is classified as a pattern of adverse reactions folowing a traumatic event involving reexperienceing the memories, also known as (PTSD).

In the movie Rent the characters Mark Cohen, Roger Davis, Mimi Marquez, Tom Collins, Angel Dumott Schunard, Marueen Johnson, and Joanne Jefferson all are tenants inside a old New York East Village. All of these tenants and friends all are struggling with either life, love, aids, or thier impact in the world. Since all of these friends are each roommates and great friends they all come together and form a social support network for one another. A social support network is frinends and social contacts that one can depend on for help and support. This movie aplies to psycology class because the social support network the frends and roommates have with one another is a way for each one of them to cope with their stress, which is in chapter 10 under social support.


Chapter 4 Consciousnes, Sleeping, and Dreaming

In this article Dr. Gott explains how the bodys circadian rhythm of sleeping work. Dr.Gott also tells the reader what factors that your brain react toward while your body is sleep which determine the depth of sleep a person undergo. This article relate to psychology class because it somewhat cites Chapter 4, Consciousness, Sleeping, and Dreaming. It Cites Chapter 4 because it also explains the brain function in secreating melatonin, from the pineal gland, incorherence to the level of light in the environment and time of day. Dr.Gott also explains this in the point of view of a psychologist.

Chapter 12 Psychological Disorders- Anxiety Disorders

The 2003 blockbuster film "Matchstick Men" is about two small time con artist, "Roy Waller and Frank Mercer," who make a living in coning people in scams. Roy Waller, who is played by Nicolas Cage, in the film starts developing a anxiety disorder, "a anxiety disorder is a conditon in which intense feelings of fear and dread are long -standing or disruptive," which starts to interfere with his career. Frank then seeks the help of a psychologist whos helps him with his disorder and the relationship between Roy and his daughter Angela. This movie relates to psychology because in the movie Roy displays the psychological anxiety disorder of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Obssesive Compulsive Disorder, or (OCD), is a anxiety disorder where a person becomes obsessed with certain thoughts or feels a compulsion to do certain things. Roy displays this disorder in the scenes where he constantly cleans his apartment, which is a display of him having a compulsion to clean up. Roy also shows OCD in the scenes when he repeatly stutter over his words due to his feeling of compulsion to stutter.

According to this ad Johnson's paints a picture of a woman that is very relaxed, as a result of using their products as a method dealing with stress. This advertisement deals with psycology because it goes along with chapter 10 "Health, Stess, and Coping." This advertisement promtes Johnson's products as a "physical stress coping method." These products is considred as a physicl stress coping method because it can be used as a form of meditation relaxation.
